A large and detailed chart of Madeira showing from Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar south to Lanzarote, with an inset plan of the approaches to Funchal. Lighthouses are marked in colour.
Lieutenant Vidal, a Royal Navy hydrographer, worked his way up through the ranks to become an admiral, and married the daughterr of the British consul in Madeira
