Description
Plans of two house designed for comfortable living in the planned colony of Sierra Leone, both with the living areas lifted from the ground. A third illustration depicts 'A Hat with 3 Valves in the Crown, very useful for those, who live in hot Climates'.
''An Essay on Colonisation Particularly Applied to the Western Coast of Africa'', by Swedish abolitionist Carl Bernhard Wadström (1746-99), was published three years after the foundation of Freetown. In this work he argued that a colony would profit more from trade with the locals than exploited them as slaves.
