Description
A decorative print with illustrations of the solar system according to Claudius Ptolemy, Nicolas Copernicus and Tycho Brahe, with an ornate baroque design. At the top Ptolemy places the Earth at the centre, with the Sun and planets revolving around us; to the left is the heliocentric system of Copernicus; amd to the right is Brahe's compromise, with the sun revolving around the Earth but the planets orbiting the Sun.
The plate comes from 'Specula physico-mathematico-historica notabilium ac mirabilium sciendorum', a finely-illustrated cosmography, written by Johann Zahn (1631-1707), a German monk, He also published a book on optics, 'Oculus Artificialis Teledioptricus Sive Telescopium' (1685), with the first extensive descriptions of both the camera obscura and the magic lantern, which he used for anatomical lectures.
