A decorative map of the Americas, with insets map of Greenland and the South Pole. It was engraved in 1618 as part of a separate-issue set of maps of the world and continents with decorative borders, engraved by Jodocus Hondius II. He originally worked in the family firm with his brother Henricus, but left to found his own business. After his death in 1629 many of his plates were sold by his widow to Blaeu, much to the annoyance of Henricus, but this plate stayed in the family. In 1631 Henricus put his own name on the plate and added this date, trimming off the decorative borders to make the map fit the standard atlas format. It was still another two years before it appeared in an Appendix, and five until it was used in a new edition of the complete atlas, as this example.
