An early view of Boston, looking across the Charles River, from Castle Hill, with South Cove, South Battery, Long Wharf and Fort Hill.
Pownall (1722-1805) sketched the city while he was governor (1757-60, during the French-Indian Wars). On his return to England his sketch was enlarged into a painting by the Irish artist Herbert Pugh (1735-88), which was then engraved by Peter Charles Canot. Canot's engraving was then copied for the Universal Magazine.
