A view of 'L'Astrolabe' and 'La Boussole' surrounded by native canoes during their visit to Maui, becoming the first Europeans to land on the island.
Although the two ships of the expedition of Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, disappeared in the Pacific in 1788, this view survived because it was among the papers sent back to France with the British merchant ship Alexander, which they met in Sydney.
