Sir William Petty (1623-87) surveyed Ireland between 1652 and 1656, while serving as Physician-General in Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army during the Commonwealth. The 'Down Survey' was created to help re-allocate land confiscated from the Irish to reward the English occupying army. It is regarded as the first British suvey of a conquered nation.
