A map of the environs of the Black Sea, presented as an aerial vierw from the south. It was published to illustrate the progress of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8, in which Russia supported independence campaigns in the Balkans and attempted to regain territory lost in the Crimean War.
Russian successes, including pushing the Ottomans back to the walls of Constantinople, were a cause for concern for the Western Powers (especially Britain in the context of the 'Great Game' with Russia); pressure was applied and Russia agreed to a truce, with negotiations leading to the Ottoman Empire recognising the independence of Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro, and the autonomy of Bulgaria.
