An illustration of the Bucentaur, the Doge of Venice's massive barge, on Ascension Day, during the 'Marriage of the Sea', when the city celebrated its maritime dominance. The barge is the third of four major barges, built in 1606 and dismantled in 1719.
This plate was engraved for Mortier's editions of Blaeu's Townbooks of Italy.
