An uncommon late state of Merian's bird's-eye view of Venice, originally issued in Frankfurt in 1635, 180 years earlier! Following the fall of Venice to Napoleon in 1797 and subsequent control by the Austrians and Italians, references to the former status quo have been removed, for example the cartouche featuring the Venetian lion and Doge's cap, and the Bucintoro (Doge's barge) on the Canale della Giudecca. Other details have been added: the Chiesa della Salute, the Castello Gardens, and even two little towers on the north side of St. Giorgio's Island, built 1813.
