A dramatic view of the City of London from south of the Thames, illustrating how London was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666. It shows from The Temple and St Dunstan's east to the Tower of London, with a sixty-point key of important buildings, mostly the churches built by Sir Christopher Wren and his associates. The title is within a maritime-themed cartouche, flanked by a dedication to Gideon Harvey the younger (c.1669-1754), as Queen Anne's Physician of the Tower, and the arms of the City supported by dragons.
Although it shares many features with the more famous prospect by Johannes Kip, it was the earlier of the two, published by James Walker (whose name still appears in the dedication) c.1704. Certainly the design of the dome of the new St Paul's Cathedral is not shown as completed in 1708, which the Kip version shows correctly.
