A scarce map of Newfoundland during the Seven Years' War, published in Raspe's 'Schau Platz des gegenwaertigen Kriegs' (Plates illustrating the Current Wars).
Since the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), France had acknowledged British ownership of the island and in return were given the right to fish from a permanent base on St. Pierre and Miquelon islands, off the south coast, here coloured red. In June 1762 a French force landed and took St John's, but a counter attack in September, with the Battle of Signal Hill, led to the French surrender.
