Mercator's map of the Ptolemaic World
MERCATOR, Gerard.
Universalis Tabula Iuxta Ptolemaeum.
Leiden, c.1700. Coloured. 350 x 490mm.
A very fine example of the Ptolemaic map of the world engraved by Mercator himself for his 1578 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geography'. He had made some changes to the mapping, preferring not to show a land-locked Indian Ocean. This later state has been re-engraved with allegorical figures of the Four Elements in the corners rather than the original windheads in strapwork decoration.
SHIRLEY: World 139, plate 118.
