Map of the Holy Land from a 16th century Dutch bible

LIESVELDT, Jacob van.

Die ghelegentheit ende die palen des lants van Beloften.
Antwerp, c.1560. Woodcut. Sheet 300 x 425mm.

Binding damage on left edge repaired with mss. fill.

A scarce map of the Holy Land after Cranach, showing from the Nile delta to Damascus in Syria, marking the Tribes and the route of the Exodus. The seas are decorated with ships and a sea monster.
It was issued in a Dutch bible published by Jacob van Liesveldt (c.1489-1545), which was the first complete bible published in the vernacular. Unfortunately it attracted the attention of the Spanish Inquisition, as much of the text had been copied from the unfinished Lutheran bible, causing them to ban it. Ignoring the edict to cease publication, Van Liesveldt was arrested, sentenced to death and beheaded the next day, and his bibles collected and burnt.
The first edition of the bible was 1526, although the map was not included until 1532. Futher editions were issued in 1532, 1533, 1535, 1538 & 1542, with a last, poshumous, edition of 1560, published by his widow.
