Description

Folding map of Antarctica created to honour the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958). Natural features are rendered in blue, international research bases in red, and territorial boundaries of dependencies are clearly marked. The map provides a probable route of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Dr. V.E. Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary, alongside references to previous expeditions, including those of Amundsen, Scott, and Byrd. Informative notes cover Antarctica's climate, vegetation, and animal life, complemented by inset diagrams comparing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and showing the British Isles at the same scale as Antarctica.
