Description
A highly-detailed wall map of Somerset, containing hundreds, parishes, towns, villages, turnpike roads, toll-bars, cross-roads, churches, castles, chapels, heaths, commons, canals, railways, distances between towns. Bottom left is a a fine vignette view of Wells Cathedral.
Although not in Somerset, Bristol is shown in small but precise detail.
Christopher Greenwood, later joined by his brother John, mapped all but five of the English counties in unprecedented detail, publishing their maps between 1817 and 1834, as the age of the railway was beginning. They ceased their work because of competition from the Ordnance Survey, but later issued a complete large-format atlas of county maps.
