Description
'Cetus' was the sea monster from which Perseus rescued Andromeda. The other three constellations were created by Bode: 'Apparatus Sculptoris' is now known as 'Sculptor'; 'Officina Chemica' is now 'Fornax'; 'Machina Electrica', the electricity generator, is obsolete.
One of a set of thirty-two cards designed by 'a young Lady' to make the study of astronomy 'familiar and amusing'. It shows the constellations as visible in the night skies of Britain, with easily identifiable classical embodiments. The card is pricked through with holes of different sizes so that the amateur astronomer can hold it up to a light and get an immediate impression of the apparent magnitude of each star. original print engraved by Sidney Hall.
