Description

A rare Italian calendar for the year 1879, satirising the state of the world. Five men (a Reactionary, Republican, Monarchist, Baker and Oilman) are attempting to sway the globe by pulling at pitons embedded in it. On top of the globe are a dog with a collar marked 'Economy', a spitting cat 'Industry' and an unnamed frog and spider. In the centre is a window, opening onto a violent puppet show, with a creditor beating a debtor, a savant attempting to teach science to an ignoramus and a carabiniere with a sword of 'Justice'. The background to the show is a barracks, a mental asylum and a prison.
