Description

An uncommon map of Martinique, published 15 years after the French colony was established by the 'Compagnie des Îles de l'Amérique' under Pierre Bélain d'Esnambuc in 1635. It still shows the French confined to the west of the island, the east described as the 'abode of Savages'. Engraved by Abraham Peyrounin (c.1620-c.1666).
