Description

Two large-scale maps: Sicily and Southern Italy; which represent the best cartographical depictions of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, formed by a merger of the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Sicily in 1816. The largest is a six-sheet map of the Kingdom of Naples, reduced from Rizzi-Zannoni's 31-sheet map by Vincenzo Aloja for Joseph Bonaparte, who was King of Naples 1806-8. This example was republished after the foundation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Rizzi-Zannoni (1736-1814) started his 31-sheet map of the Kingdom of Naples in 1788, under the Bourbon monarch Ferdinand IV. He continued his work under the rules of Joseph Bonaparte and Joachim Murat, taking the role of head of the 'Deposito Topografico' in 1807. The quality of the work has led him to be regarded as the most influential Italian cartographer since Magini. The second map is a four-sheet map of Sicily, compiled by the ' Officio Topografico di Napoli' from various sources but specifically William Henry Smyth (1788-1865), who served in the Royal Navy for over 40 years. After fighting the French and Spanish in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars, Smyth was stationed in Sicily, where he surveyed the coasts of the island, mainland Italy and North Africa. Using his work, this map is regarded as the best map of Sicily to be published
