Description

A detailed chart of the Strait of Magellan, engraved by Russell for Hawkesworth's 'An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...'. The chart was not engraved in time for the First Edition, but was only included in the second edition (the same year as the first). Although Hawkesworth's book contained the Official Account of Cook's First Voyage, this chart owes nothing to Cook's discoveries. In fact he never went through the strait, rounding Cape Horn on the first two voyages and the Cape of Good Hope twice on the Third.

Condition:

Original folds flattened.
