Andreas Cellarius (c.1596–1665) was a German-Dutch cartographer best known for the celebrated celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, published by Johannes Janssonius. Issued during a period of intense debate over the structure of the cosmos, the atlas presented the Ptolemaic, Copernican and Tychonic cosmological systems in a series of large, finely engraved plates.
The individual plates from Harmonia Macrocosmica, include detailed charts of the Ptolemaic geocentric spheres, the Copernican heliocentric model, Christian cosmological diagrams and celebrated constellation maps of both hemispheres. These engraved celestial maps are widely regarded as among the most decorative and historically significant astronomical charts of the seventeenth century.
