Description

A large-scale map of London, extending to St George's Hospital (now the Lanesborough Hotel at Hyde Park Corner) clockwise to Clerkenwell, Wapping and Lambeth. The area burned by the Great Fire of London in 1666 is shown by lighter shading. Inset vignettes include a prospect of London from the South and elevations of Banqueting House, the Treasury, the Royal Exchange, St Paul's Cathedral, the Monument (to the Great Fire of London) and the Bank of England. Other decorations include the title cartouche, the Royal arms and the crests of the twelve city companies from whom the Lord Major of London was chosen. The text strips contain an extensive index of street names against the map's grid system. When this plan of London was first published in 1736 it was one of the largest printed maps of London ever issued.
