Description

An example of the right sheet of a two-sheet, separate-issue sea chart of the Indian Ocean, Far East and Australia, of great importance because it is the first printed map to mark the discoveries of Abel Tasman in northern Australia in 1644. It is an example of the rare first state, predating the addition of a title in 1660. The chart shows from the Bay of Bengal east to the 'island' of Korea and Japan and south to Australia, which is marked 'Hollandia Nova; detecta A.º 1644'. Around the Gulf of Carpentaria are names provided by Tasman: 'van Diemens R', 'C van Dieman' (both named for Tasman's patron, Anthony van Diemen. governor of the Dutch East Indies) and 'Abel Tasmans Riv'. , The east and south-east coasts have yet to be mapped.

Condition:

One sheet of two. Trimmed into printed boder top and bottom.
