Description
An important edition of Ptolemy atlas, with maps engraved by Gastaldi derived from Munster's woodcuts, supplemented with 34 'modern' maps. This work was not only the first pocket atlas and the first intaglio Ptolemy edition since Berlingheri in 1482, it also contained the first two engraved maps devoted to North America, leading Nordenskiöld to call it 'The very first atlas of the new world'. The text is Ptolemy's Geography and Munster's Commentaries, both translated into Italian by Piero Andrea Mattioli, the famous botanist.
