Description
A view of Whitehall Palace at the end of the 17th century, with Horse Guards Parade in the foreground, with the King's Life Guards in formation. The view predates the devastating fire of 1698, and shows the barracks, Banquetting House (the only survivor of the fire) and the Holbein Gate'. On the Parade are carriages and sedan chairs.
The plate was engraved by Johannes Kip (1653-1722) and published in John's Strype's 'A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster', a continuation of 'Stow's Survey'. This example comes from the first edition.
