Description

An early scientific illustration, depicting channels under the Earth, linking the volcanoes erupting on the surface. The plate is made even more decorative by the clouds and wind-heads in the borders. The plate was published in the 'Mundus Suberraeneus' by Athanasius Kircher (1602-80), a Jesuit scholar who was one of the first compilers of knowledge of the physical features of the world.
