Description
This 1830 map of the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, and Nubia, published by Daniel Lizars in Edinburgh, reflects the early 19th century’s growing European interest in the Arab world. The map details the western coast of the Red Sea, Egypt, Nubia, and two Persian caravan routes. Notably, early names for locations such as "Koueit or Groen" for Kuwait, "Catura" for Qatar, and "Mascalat and Julfar" for the UAE are shown on the map.
Daniel Lizars was part of a renowned Scottish family of engravers and printers. His father, Daniel Lizars Sr. (1754-1812), established a printworks in Edinburgh and trained notable apprentices, including George Bartholomew, whose descendants would later found the influential mapmaking firm John Bartholomew & Son Ltd. Upon his father’s death, Daniel Jr. (1793-1875) took over the business, specializing in maps until its bankruptcy in 1832, after which he emigrated to Canada.
