Description

A map of Africa south of the Equator, still showing the Mountains of the Moon. At the time of publication Madagascar was notorious as a pirate stronghold, using Saint Augustine's Bay, Antongil Bay and Île Sainte-Marie (all marked on this map) as bases to plunder European, Arab and Indian traders. Moll first published his 'Atlas Minor' in 1729 but, shortly after his death in 1732, Thomas Bowles and his son John reissued it with plate numbers added.
