Description

A map of north-west Italy, marking Milan, Como, Parma and Genoa, published to illustrate events of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). In 1701 a French army occupied Milan and Mantua in the Austrian-rulled territory; in May an Imperial army under Prince Eugene of Savoy moved into Northern Italy in an attempt to dislodge them. Eugene (whose partnership with the Duke of Marlborough led to some of England's most famous victories in the war) ended the French occupation with the successful siege of Turin in 1706.
