A 16th century woodcut map of Europe

A fine example of one of the first maps specifically of Europe, published in 'Polyhistor Rerum totu Orbe', a 3rd century text by Solinus edited by Sebastian Münster, first published in 1538. The map is based on Ptolemy (with Scotland having an west-east slant) and quite rudimentary, with not every country named and only two cities, Carthage and Constantinople. The Alps and Pyrennees are marked, as are the Danube and Rhine rivers, and the major islands of the Mediterranean,
