An 18th century view of the infamous Bedlam hospital

A view of facade of Bethlehem Hospital, the infamous psychiatric hospital 'Bedlam', as designed by Robert Hooke in 1676, situated in Moorfields. at the end of the 17th century. Caius Gabriel Cibber's Portland stone statues of ''Melancholy'' and ''Raving Madness'' can be seen above the gate. The plate was probably engraved by either Johannes Kip (1653-1722) or Sutton Nichols, and was published in John's Strype's 'A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster', a continuation of 'Stow's Survey'. This example comes from the first edition.
