Description
A large and detailed map of the United States, marking railroads, canals and 'McAdamized Roads'. Insets include: continuations of the map for Florida and Oregon & Mandan; maps of the environs of Albany, Boston, New York Philadelphia & Trenton, Batimore and Washington; and plans of Cincinnati, Charleston, New Orleans, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Pittsburg. The title is within a finely-engraved cartouche featuring two deer.
Tanner's map is one of the most important of the United States of the 19th century. First published in 1829, the map was reissued several times until 1850. Originally the bottom right was filled with profiles of a railroad and canals, but by this edition the map had been re-engraved to show Texas, which has declared itself a republic two years before. Unlike the rest of the map, the Municipal Districts of Texas are marked, using early name including San Antonio, Travis and Houston.
