Description
A very important world map: it was the first Ptolemaic map published outside Italy; the first printed to be from a woodblock, the first to be signed by the engraver ('Johann, woodcutter from Armszheim'); and the first to be updated to show Scandinavia and Greenland. It is made more stiking by the ten large wind heads surrounding the map.
The map was probably based on a manuscript by the cartographer Nicolaus Germanus Donis, although Scandinavia (with the first printed appearance of Greenland) comes from either Claudius Calvius (1427) or the Zamoiski codex (c.1467). Despite these changes there is no sign of any of the Portuguse discoveries in West Africa.
An error in the printing means that both tropics are named Cancer, which is corrected in manuscript.
Soon after publication Holle went bankrupt, probably because of the huge production costs, and Johan Reger acquired the rights to the atlas, reissuing the second and last edition of this version in 1486.
