Description

A map of Guam in the Mariana Islands, illustrating the visit of first Dutch circumnavigator Olivier Van Noort in 1600, when the Dutch crews bartered food for iron scraps, This map was engraved by one of the foremost map engravers of the period, Baptista van Doetecum, for Van Noort's 'Description du Penible Voyage Faict entour de l'Univers ou Globe Terrestre', published 1602. This example, with a plate number bottom right and evidence of a crack in the copper plate, was published in Isaak Commelin's history of the Dutch East India Comapny, 'Begin ende Voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie'.
