Description
A rare early cartographic appearance of the name Catara, the earliest recorded name for modern-day Qatar, on a richly decorative map of the Arabian Peninsula.
The map highlights classical geography and includes a vignette with nine medallions. The name Catara, derived from Ptolemy’s writings, had vanished from maps for centuries and only re-emerged in printed form in the 18th century.
