A 16th century plan of Weimar

An early plan of Weimar in Thuringia, which appeared in volume three of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' atlas of town plans, first published in 1581. It takes the form of a bird's-eye view looking down on the city from the west, towards the Ilm river, with the buildings shown in perspective. Of importance are Hornstein Castle (upper centre), the Grünes Schloss (now part of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library), on the southern wall of the city, and the Evangelical St. Peter and Paul church (known as Die Herderkirche).
