A large and important 19th century map of the Moon

A rare map of the Moon, compiled by Léon Fenet from the observations of Casimir Marie Gaudibert (1823-1901), overseen by Camille Flammarion (1842-1925), founder and first president of the 'Société astronomique de France'. Around the map is a key of 509 craters. Despite being an amateur astronomer, Gaudibert was praised for the precision of his observations, taking over 15 years. His fame was extended when Bertaux, the publisher of this map, created a lunar globe from his data. A crater on the Moon has been named in his honour.
