An important two-sheet map of the Dnieper River

A two-sheet map of the Dnieper River, engraved by Hessel Gerritsz after an inset on the Radziwill-Makowski map of Lithuania, and originally published by Blaeu as a side panel to his own large map of Lithuania in 1613. Although it is one of Blaeu's earliest maps, it did not appear in an atlas until the early 1630s. It shows the river in two strips, flowing through Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to the estuary on the Black Sea. Decorative cartouches give information about the route, describing the cataracts (bottom of left strip), cities and fortresses, and the traditions of the Kozaks.
