A scarce set of gores for a mid-19th century celestial globe

Two sheets (of three) containing eight gores (of 12) for a 12" celestial globe, showing the apparent magnitude of the stars but only showing the zodiac constellations in their allegorical forms. The sheets show from April to November (Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo & Libra), lacking December to March (Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius). William Harris (1787-1843) joined his father Thomas (c.1757-1831) in the firm of Thomas Harris & Son, 'opticians & globe makers' but began his own business in 1828, operating from 22 Cornhill. His business failed in 1840 and he was imprisoned for debt, when he was described as a ''coffee shopkeeper'' on his bankruptcy papers. His son, William Dolland Harris, continued as an optician and globe maker until his death in 1861, based at 38 Arundel Street.
