Description
A large and detailed sea chart of the East Asian mainland from Nha Trang in Vietnam north to Hong Hai (Shanwei) in China, marking Canton and Hong Kong. It has four coastal profiles and eight inset charts including the 'Approaches to Hong-Kong' (250 x 345mm, the largest ) and Nha Trang. The 'Route to and from Hong-Kong during the fair Monsoon' is marked across the chart.
The chartseller's label reads 'Sold By H. Hughes, Nautical Instrument Maker and Chart Seller, 59 Fenchurch St.t London'. Henry Hughes founded his company in 1828, becoming 'Henry Hughes and Son' in 1903. During the First World War they developed the first compass for use in aeroplanes. After the company's building was destroyed in the Blitz in 1941, the firm became Kelvin & Hughes. That company was sold to S. Smith & Sons in 1953.
