Description

This is not the usual map of Asia from the Hondius/Jansson editions of Mercator's atlas, but one of a separately issued set of continents with town prospects and costumes on all four sides of the maps. These first appeared bound in an Appendix dated 1630, but the exceptionally large height of the maps caused problems fitting them into an atlas. This example, dated two years later, has had the bottom row of prospects trimmed from the copper plate to make the printer's life easier. A rare item
