Description

A colourfull world map on Mercator's Projection, surrounded by vignette illustrations of the landmarks of the world and panels of national flags. Along the maps borders, iconic structures are illustrated, including the Eiffel Tower, the Acropolis, the Sphinx in Cairo, and Mount Fuji in Japan. Under the map in another row of illustrations: a map of the world in an oval projection; maps and illustrations of both the Panama and Suez canals; and maps and illustrations of the exploration of both poles. The map seems to have been published to celebrate the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-8) and the crossing of the Arctic by the American nuclear submarine USN Nautilus in 1958.
