Description

An example of the last plate of three that Ortelius used to print his world map, with the date 1587 engraved on the Great Southern Continent. This is an early example, from its first regular appearance in the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. While keeping the oval projection of the previous plates, the cloud borders have been replaced with strapwork and roundels, and the second bulge on the west coast of South America has been removed.

Condition:

Minor repairs at centre fold.
