Description

A large chart of the Philippines drawn by Lowitz after the chart of Spanish Jesuit Father Pedro de Murillo Velarde, published 1734, with a Spanish sur-title and French and Sapnish text on the map. The route of Magellen through the island chains is marked, as are the routes from the Philippine to New Spain. The map is decorated with rococo cartouches for the title and French-text history. George Moritz Lowitz (1722-1774) was a professor of Mathematics at Nuremberg and an astronomer. He took over globe production af Homann Heirs in 1746 but left to work for the Russians as a surveyor. He was killed by Cossacks while surveying the Volga region.
