Description

A beautiful map of Egypt and eastern Libya in the classical period, with an elaborate strapwork cartouche and vignettes of a chameleon, an ostrich, fighting lions and a winged dragon. The map was compiled by Gerard Mercator for his edition of Claudius Ptolemy's 'Geographia', first published 1578. This example comes from the 'Theatrum Geographiae Veteris', with a text by Petrus Bertius.

Condition:

A very fine example.
