Description

Moll's large-format map of the Far East, first published in 1714, detailing the early development of the English East India Company. The map extends from the Malabar Coast of India to south-western Japan. Five insets on the left show a plan of Bantam (the most important Javanese port for the spice trade with Europe until its harbour silted up in the late 18th century); prospects of the ports of Goa and Surat; a plan of Batavia (Jakarta); and of the Fort of St. George and the city of Madras. The East India Company's coat of arms appears above the dedication to the far right. Moll also provided many informative and often amusing annotations across the map. Because of the cost of this large format atlas, Moll later teamed up with other London publishers to spread the expense, including John Bowles, Philip Overton and John King. This example only has Moll's name.
