Description
A large and detailed map of Sicily, originally issued 1757, marking the physical features, especially Mount Etna, which is highlighted in colour.
Scottish architect Robert Mylne (1733-1811) travelled around Italy in the 1750s during a 'Grand Tour', visiting Sicily and studying architectural ornament under the famed Giovanni Battista Piranesi in Rome. On his return home Mylne won a competition to design Blackfriar's Bridge. He sent a sketch of the bridge under construction to his mentor Piranesi, who engraved a copper plate which he sent back as a gift, which remains the only Piranesi engraving of London.
