A beautiful 17th century Dutch map of Sicily

One of the most decorative atlas maps of Sicily by Frederick De Wit, with inset plans of Messina, Milazzo, Palermo, Catania and Trapani. Vignette sea-battles and the detail of the fortifications of the cities give evidence to the continuing conflict between the Europeans and the Turks. Thi is an early example: c.1690 it was re-engraved it with a corrected outline of the island, an altered title and a new title cartouche featuring Etna. After De Wit's death the plate passed to Pieter Mortier then the firm of Covens and Mortier.
