Description

A rare map of Cyprus, drawn by Piacenza for his 'L'Egeo Redivivo, o' sia chorographia dell'arcipelago... che della Grecia, Morea, o' Peloponnese, di Candia, e Cipri'. This was a description of the Greek Islands based on the author's own travels, undertaken at a time when Europe was in conflict with the Ottoman Empire. He died before finishing the account of Cyprus, the final chapter of his book, so it was completed by Gicaomo Cantella da Vignola. Francesco Piacenza (1637-87) was a law professor at the University of Modena. He was also a keen chess player, and published a treatise on the history of the game in 1683.
